This category is built on the work by Casel and is focused on incorporating social emotional learning into a traditionally academic structure. These practices support students with higher ACES factors and alleviates confusion about the source of behaviors.

Social Emotional Learning strategies guide us to...
start from sources of strength
utilize strategies to manage emotions
cultivate empathy

Example Strategies

FACTOR IN HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT THEIR LEARNING
[Self-Awareness] Have students contribute to a word cloud when they get to class to rate how their day is going. This will give a sense of how much support is needed. For primary, they can drag their picture on an interactive board to the face image that fits how they feel. (😊, 😐)

PRIORITIZE MASLOW'S OVER BLOOM'S
[Self-Management] Have students create a list of actions they can take to check in on their peers. This list can live as a Google Site webpage on the board during times like silent reading or in the form of Google Slides that can be printed. Each slide can be developed by a different student or in pairs. They can teach the class about their strategy as well.

BUILD COMMUNITY SUPPORT IN CLASS CULTURE
[Relationship Skills] Create Check-In Buddies or Peer Partners that have a regular check-in with the WHOLE person - school related and personal status. Pairs or groups can use exit tickets as they leave class to identify needs for the next day or share celebrations. Google Forms is great for this!

INCLUDE CULTURAL AND SOCIAL AWARENESS IN CONTENT
[Social-Awareness] Create an awareness collage of the class that includes the unique and special knowledge that each student brings. This acknowledges how they see themselves! Different perspectives the members of the group bring to the group. Refer to that collage along with Google Earth & NewsELA to tap into the knowledge of the group during discussions.

START FROM A SOURCE OF STRENGTH
[Self-Awareness] Use a Google Slide to have each student create a learner profile that describes them as a learner including preferences, strengths, habits of mind they excel in, and strategies they use to help them learn. They should refer to this profile when they are setting goals. They can identify what traits, habits, and strategies can help them accomplish their goal.  Habits of Mind can provide a strong vocabulary base for students to use in this.
